This video is featured on the extras of DC's newest animated original film 'Superman vs. The Elite' blu-ray edition. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the still-in-progress production of 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns' based on Frank Miller's 1986 classic tale of an aged Bruce Wayne called back into action to save Gotham.
One of the most influential comics of all time, Dark Knight Returns is set in a near future where Batman is retired and Gotham City has slid into a dystopian state ruled by a gang of hooligans called the Mutants. The 55-year old Bruce Wayne is forced to don the cape once more, this time partnering with a female Robin to not only stop the Joker but keep the peace when the city falls into chaos after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse. The substantial story will be split between two films, one released this fall and one next year. As evidenced by another animated Batman feature,
Batman: Year One, DC takes these adaptations seriously and their animators have consistently produced great quality features. This one is based on one of the most influential Batman stories arguably of all time. It heavily influenced the tone of Christopher Nolan's Batman films and set the standard along with Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons' 'Watchmen' for adult, gritty, and dark themes in graphic novels. I would highly suggest picking it up and reading it before the movie is released. You won't be disappointed.
