Rumors Confound Websites While Fans Cheer the Possibility
On the heels of casting news of a strong female role for the Man of Steel sequel, Marvel movie rumors are running wild today because Battlestar Galactica alum, Katee Sackhoff, has been in talks with the studio for some unknown venture. "There's been some stuff going," she told Schmoes Knows Podcast when asked if there's been any contact by the studio to work on a project,"a lot of checking availability for the first quarter of next year."She specified the studio was Disney but gave no further details about the role, movie, character or anything concrete. It's very intriguing but nothing solid so far. She's openly stated before that she'd like to play a comic book character like Harley Quinn or Captain Marvel if the chance ever arose.
Stoking the fire further was the comments made by producer/director Louis D'Esposito to ComingSoon.net that at least admitted there was a desire to do a female-led superhero film at some point.
"There's obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero," he says. "… [W]e have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there's an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?"
Whether backtracking or playing coy, D'Esposito made it clear that it's not in the works now and may not be until this phase of Marvel movies is complete.
"It's hard," he says. "because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that's what we're really concentrating on."
So based on this the prospect of Sackhoff playing Carol Danvers is still an unfulfilled dream. Although, it makes a lot of sense since Sackhoff could easily play Captain Marvel. She's tough, smart and powerful. She shares her looks and stature and is already a fan favorite from her roles in BG, Riddick, Bionic Woman, and 24. There wouldn't be a "Batfleck" effect if she were indeed cast.
My only concern, because we are big fans of Wonder Woman, is that the backlash on Warner Bros. would be enormous if Captain Marvel made it to the big screen before the Amazonian princess, who's been deemed "tricky" to portray on film by the studio. We've voiced our concern before but considering the flexibility Marvel has to turn around movies in comparison to the glacial pace at WB, we feel the pomp and circumstance due to Wonder Woman will be usurped by Captain Marvel. In the end it won't matter which comes first as long a strong female-led superhero film finally makes a splash in theaters and comic book fans ultimately get rewarded.
