The Writer Has a Pitch for Warner Bros.
As much as I'd like to believe that 'Chronicle' writer, Max Landis, is preparing to make and win his pitch for a Wonder Woman movie to Warner Bros. I'll continue to wallow in Eeyore-style cynicism until I see a raging fire and not just smoke. During a recent Reddit AMA, Landis was asked a lot questions regarding comic book movies leading to some interesting answers and some mysterious ones.
Max Landis: 1970s gritty blaxploitation Heroes For Hire movie.
Alright. Here we go. What is one comic book story you want to bring to the cinema?
ML: Batman: The Long Halloween.
What do you think of Ben affleck as Batman? Who do you think would play the perfect Batman?
ML: Everyone's version of Batman would be different, but I think Affleck is probably fine.
All pretty standard stuff for a guy who wrote a script about kids getting super powers but the comments getting the most traction were those involving Green Lantern and Wonder Woman.
Presented with the opportunity to write a super flick, that would get made regardless, for any character, any arc, anything you want. Who would you choose and why?
ML: Either a version of Green Lantern that played like ET meets Stand By Me using the goth/punk seen and Kyle Raynor, or Wonder-Woman, using a pitch that I intend to make to WB.
Emphasis on "intend to" with regards to either GL or WW movie pitches. Warner Bros. could still poo-poo the idea because according to DC Entertainment making superhero movies is hard and female-led hero movies are extremely "tricky". The other response was awfully curious.
If you could do a reboot of any character, TV show or film what would it be? And what would you do with it?
ML: You'll know sooner than you think.
Now this leads some to believe the reboot could be Wonder Woman but it could be any number of reboots of properties from all over the entertainment map. It could be a reboot of 'Dukes of Hazard' for all we know. I'd like to believe that Warner Bros. is getting organized with a deliberate plan to introduce characters like Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and maybe Cyborg in their own feature films leading to a great Justice League movie. I'd like to, I really would. However, history has shown us that WB is either unwilling or incapable of devising a blueprint (a la Marvel) to produce these much anticipated movies.
No bigger travesty is the lack of even attempting to make a Wonder Wonder movie. DC Comics' iconic Amazon has been the epitome of superhero women for over 70 years yet the last successful live-action project was the 1970's television show starring Lynda Carter. Since then there's been numerous TV and film adaptations for the publisher's other two icons, Superman and Batman. Certainly, the contrast in productions is stark and any efforts to change that have failed miserably. A young Amazon show at the CW has stalled, a pilot by David E. Kelley was an atrocity that mercifully was not picked up by NBC, and years ago the director of Marvel's box office behemoth The Avengers, Joss Whedon, wrote a Wonder Woman script that went nowhere so here we are still clamoring for her due.
I think Landis would do a great job adapting a DC character to film. He is a fan of comics and so he understands the medium and the impact he could have with the right movie. I hope he gets the chance and soon. At this point I'll chalk it up to only speculation, much like the Katee Sackhoff as Captain Marvel rumors which she is shooting down, because I know there's a lot of talented people in entertainment who would love to take on comic book films if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, the publisher who currently can't get out of their own way and the short-sighted studio have chosen to put all their eggs in one basket: Man of Steel 2. Until we get solid word that Wonder Woman has a script, director and lead we'll continue to wait. And wait.
