Dwayne Johnson and DC Find the Right Superhero Project

Dwayne Johnson has long been rumored to be joining this golden age of superhero films but the question has always been as which character. There's been speculation it was Black Adam, Lobo, Martian Manhunter and he even hinted at Green Lantern. Yet there's been no confirmation of any role in particular up until now. During a group interview promoting his newest feature Hercules at CinemaCon, Johnson told Collider that he and DC Entertainment have settled on a hero that met his parameters:

Here are three qualities. The first quality we were looking for was that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on. What that does for me as an actor and the studio is it gives us space that we can explore; his complexities. The other quality was that he had to — the character we were looking for had to be well-known but never brought to life. Then what that does again as an actor, it gives me a little bit of space, and we talked about personality. It just gives me a chance to put an imprint into his personality, with the set of tools that I could bring to the table and put a very unique twist on his personality, but still pay homage to who he is. The third thing — and most important — is he had to be a badass motherfucker, okay, and on a Superman level of power, where could throw down. In those three qualities, I’m happy we’ve found that character. Right now, we’re out to a lot of writers.
So after years of negotiations and discussions it seems we'll see Johnson as someone from the DC Comics universe. We still don't know who and whether he'll be part of the projected Justice League project or just a stand-alone feature. Or if he'll have a cameo in the upcoming 'Batman vs Superman' movie. We can speculate though he'll be a member of the Justice League with plenty of recognition considering the star power Johnson brings and the pressure of Warner Bros. and DC to deliver a mind-blowing ensemble piece on par with Marvel's Avengers. They wouldn't make another superhero movie that wouldn't tie-in to a larger phase of films. Not at this juncture when their output so far has been sparse I can't imagine they'd make just a solo movie.

The search for a writer or writers is on and it's possible we'll know which character by the San Diego Comic-con in July.
