Apparently you call two of the hottest directors in the biz |
Just when I had abandoned hope for a decent sequel to the '80s classic, Ghostbusters, now comes rumor that the project could still be salvaged with some talented new directors at the helm. According to Nikki Finke, formerly of Deadline, sources claim that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) are being sought to take over the long delayed third installment of the paranormal exterminators comedy.
After the passing of Harold Ramis, co-writer and co-star of the first two movies, director Ivan Reitman decided he was going to step back from directing duties and only produce the third. Without the likelihood of fellow Ghostbuster Bill Murray joining the production this left the project in a precarious predicament with only Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson left to call if you see a ghost. It's been an uphill battle to try and get this made for years but Reitman seems content with the script produced by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder).
Lord and Miller are riding high on the success of The LEGO Movie ($380 million box office worldwide) and one of the first to take an '80s television reboot to the big screen, 21 Jump Street, and make it a funny hit (the sequel 22 Jump Street arrives June 12, 2014). Their sense of wild action and humor lend themselves perfectly for a Ghostbusters movie. If they sign on they could inject some of their sensibilities into the script with Reitman overlooking it all. The once doomed sequel no one wanted might have the right pieces in place to make it work after all. Even without Murray.
