Comic book release day has some interesting debuts this week but the most anticipated is the return of Rat Queens from Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. Image's snarky medieval fantasy band of maidens are back and a complete joy to read. After a successful trade paperback of the first arc the fan-favorite title returns with #6. It's the perfect time to jump on the bandwagon.
Also from Image comes Nailbiter #1 by Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson. What happens when a serial killer is on the loose and an FBI agent goes missing? If you're NSA agent Finch you team up with a serial killer of your own and try to uncover the mystery. This is the horror mystery you've been looking for.
Speaking of mysteries, Marvel unleashes a whodunit of their own with Original Sin #1. The 8-issue mini-series revolves around the murder of Uatu the Watcher and Marvel's all-stars are on the case. Nick Fury, Captain America, Wolverine, Black Panther, Thor, Spider-Man and more are all on board with crossovers in store as well (of course). Story by Jason Aaron and art by Mike Deodato.
It's a good week for Marvel fans as Cyclops #1 and Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1 get new runs with super-scribes Greg Rucka and Brian Michael Bendis, respectively, at the helm.
Just in time for the major motion picture release of Godzilla on May 16 comes an original graphic novel prequel by the film's screenwriter Max Borenstein and his brother Greg Borenstein entitled Godzilla: Awakening from Legendary Comics. It is set decades before the events of the film and centered around Mr. Serizawa, a Hiroshima survivor-turned-government agent who becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the huge monster he encounters while responding to a distress call in the South Pacific. The cinematic artwork is provided by Eric Battle and Yvel Guichet.
On the DC Comics front there's the excellent Vertigo post-apocalyptic water-world of The Wake #8 (of 10) from Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy. This exciting tale of a world where man and woman have to battle Mers, underwater race of creatures, in a future Earth.
In Future's End, DC is again looking for your weekly dollars in this star-studded weekly series featuring Batman Beyond's Terry McGuiness who travels back in time to try to avert the impending apocalypse. As usual with their other weekly books, DC has assembled some of the best writers to churn this one out with Jeff Lemire, Brain Azzarello, Dan Jergens, and Keith Giffen. Art by Patrick Zircher.
