Guillermo del Toro is Writing 'Pacific Rim 2' Whether it Gets Made or Not

Buzzfeed caught up with the uber-director, Guillermo del Toro, while promoting his new FX series, The Strain, during the Austin Television Festival and he revealed he is working on the screenplay to the sequel of his international hit movie, Pacific Rim. Just one problem - Legendary Pictures has not committed to producing a sequel...yet.
“I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening,” the Mexican auteur told Buzzfeed.
He and screenwriter Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra) have been working in secret for months and hopes to have it done after his next project. As to what the story will be he made clear despite the popular opinion of making a prequel he prefers to advance the events from the first film including characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) in what he promises to be some "very new, very crazy ideas on the second one."

One of the stumbling blocks to getting the greenlight for the sequel about robots vs monsters might be the surprisingly meager domestic return of $101.8 million on a $190 million budget. Thankfully, it was a smash overseas with $309.2 internationally. It's becoming more of a global movie market anyway so Legendary's risk could be minimal.

When and if Rim 2 ever gets made it could be a while anyway since del Toro is busy producing the TV series, directing Crimson Peak, and producing the animated The Book of Life. Juggling this many projects may be too much even for him.
