Marvel Turns to Peyton Reed to Direct and Adam McKay to Rewrite 'Ant-Man'

In the search to find Edgar Wright's replacement, Marvel has not one but two directors to salvage Ant-Man. One, Peyton Reed (Yes Man, Bring it On), will do the actual directing while the other, Adam McKay (Anchorman, The Other Guys), will be rewriting the script that Wright co-wrote then was secretly altered by Marvel's house writers. Reed became the viable option after many other candidates, including McKay, turned it down.

Michael Dowse, Nicholas StollerRawson Marshall Thurber and Ruben Fleischer were all reportedly approached to direct after Wright and Marvel parted ways over the direction of the film. A direction that should have been crystal clear to both parties considering the eight years it's been in development. As bizarre as the sudden conflict of creative differences was the search for another director became a cavalcade of Hollywood's hottest directors only to have them pass on the superhero flick.

Reed is known more for lighter comedic fare in film and TV. The Break UpDown with Love on the big screen with episodes of New Girl and The Upright Citizens Brigade on television fill Reed's directing resume. He seems the type of up and coming director Marvel was looking for to take a leap into big action hero comedy. What could go wrong?

Here's Marvel's official press release:
When Marvel’s “Ant-Man” hits theaters July 17, 2015, director Peyton Reed will help shepherd the hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a cast led by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, with writer Adam McKay contributing to the film’s script.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
