NBC's DC Comics-based supernatural thriller, Constantine, may be getting into some magical world building as it took an international trailer to show a familiar helmet from none other than Doctor Fate. The powerful sorcerer, or rather his helmet makes a cameo, and who knows maybe more in the series that could introduce the dark forces in the DC universe.
With other DC Comics shows on other networks it's not likely they'll share a cohesive universe but the NBC show could be central to the magical aspects of the comics that also include Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man and Zatanna. Fate has already appeared in live-action on Smallville but this series appears much darker with an emphasis on horror and chills.
It's entirely possible that this will be a primer to the Justice League Dark movie that was rumored to be championed by Guillermo del Toro. If, and this is a big "if," Warner Bros. was smart they'd fast track the supernatural team-up with Marvel already working with their magical hero, Dr. Strange.
Doctor Fate is the name of several fictional characters in the DC Universe who are a succession of sorcerers. The original version of the character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman, and first appeared in More Fun Comics #55 (May 1940). - DC Wiki
Based on the wildly popular comic book series "Hellblazer" from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell... hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight - or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to leave his do-gooder life behind. But when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine's oldest friends, he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray - and he'll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it's revealed that Liv's "second sight," an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences, is a threat to a mysterious new evil that's rising in the shadows. And now it's not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world - and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows... maybe there's hope for him and his soul after all.
From Executive Producer David S. Goyer ("Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight Rises") and director Neil Marshall ("Game of Thrones," "The Descent") comes a dark new thriller that proves fighting evil is a hell of a job.
