After hiring Godzilla director, Gareth Edwards, Disney/Lucasfilm has tapped Chronicle and Fantastic Four filmmaker Josh Trank to also helm a stand-alone Star Wars movie.
The question of course is which spin-off feature will it be? Just as the guessing began when Edwards was announced will Trank take on a Yoda, Boba Fett, Han Solo, or other classic Star Wars character? Whichever it is it won't be a part of the upcoming trilogy by J.J Abrams starting with Star Wars: Episode VII.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
Disney plans to have a Star Wars movie every year for a
decade and these spin-offs fill the gaps between episodes of the major continuity. Trank is currently at work with the Fantastic Four reboot for 20th Century Fox for release in 2015.
Trank has been a hot commodity in Hollywood since his
success with the superpowered Chronicle in 2012. Always in the mix for the next comic book movie, Trank, was snatched up by Fox for FF. Seems the folks at Disney have an eye on the next generation of filmmakers in Trank, Edwards, Abrams, Joss Whedon, Russo brothers, etc. Let's hope with the amount of features the gigantic studio has in the works they'll begin to broaden their talent pool to include some diversity and brand new voices.
In the meantime, fans have a lot to look forward to between Disney properties like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and their own studios. Good thing Trank has had some experience with light sabers if this short film he created in 2007 is any indication.
