After having the ladies on The View announce the new female Thor comic book series, Marvel's CCO Joe Quesada will appear on The Colbert Report tonight to reveal another all-new title for a "classic super hero." The press release also adds "all-new era" for this character which should mean it's as significant as the Thor announcement.
Unlike the reveal on the daytime talk show, both Quesada and Colbert will probably offer more details about the upcoming changes and actually mention the creative team behind it. Whoopi Goldberg did her best to convey the news with little help from her fellow hosts who didn't add much to the discussion.
The general consensus online is that the announcement will be introduce the new Captain America. And it could mean that Sam Wilson, the current Falcon, will be taking over the shield. It would make perfect sense since he's been a longtime ally and partner. Marvel announced a new Cap would be announced soon after the events in the comic book series found Steve Rogers without his powers.
According to writer Rick Remender, Rogers will remain as a mentor but will not be in the field. He would also be choosing his successor from a short list of candidates. Like the Thor gender-swap an entirely new Cap could have significant ramifications beyond the comic books.
The question is will these changes affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward? Could we see these storylines play out on film in an effort to extend the life of future projects like The Avengers? It would be interesting to see these familiar characters take on whole new personas and welcome a new dynamic and diversity.
