It turns out that previous reports were true. Veteran artist David Finch and his writer wife, Meredith, will be taking over for Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang with issue #36 of Wonder Woman. The couple have big shoes to fill after a dynamic run of the New 52 restart of the Amazon princess.
Azzarello and Chiang re-energized the iconic superhero with a revamped origin story and an exploration of her Greek mythology roots and family. Traditionalists were displeased (what else is new) with making Diana the daughter of Zeus and the Amazon's infanticide of male births. Critics need not worry as David explains to USA Today that the focus will be more on interpersonal relationships and her Justice League responsibilities.
"A big part of what Meredith wants to do is write a story about a woman who is trying to take on all of those different things and try to make them all work together."
Another issue concerning fans was the inexperience of Meredith and her ascension to write for such an iconic figure. Would a more established writer be more appropriate for one of DC's holy trinity? Perhaps, but in an industry that is consistently a target of scorn for its lack of female talent here you have a female writer penning a female-led book. And not just any book but a character that has been a feminist icon for decades and will finally get the big screen treatment that she's long deserved. This responsibility isn't lost on Mrs. Finch.
"It makes sense if you're going to try to attract that female market that you appeal to them on every level — your writing demographic reflects the demographic of your readership."
It's petty and completely unfair to underestimate and ridicule Meredith for having written for Zenescope Entertainment. The novel approach would be to read the issue first then criticize.
Wonder Woman #36 hits shops in November.
