NBC's CONSTANTINE has Cast Angelica Celaya as Zed

After it was announced that Lucy Griffiths would be leaving NBC's Constantine the search was on for another actress to play a familiar comic book character, Zed. Today at the Television Critic's Association press junket executive producer David Goyer revealed that Angelica Celaya has been cast as the foil and right-hand woman to the beleaguered supernatural detective.

Producers noted they felt "hamstrung" by the original character, Liv, that was created for the show and Griffiths had been cast to play but sought to have a more dynamic relationship instead with someone from the canon of comics. Zed, in the Hellblazer comics, aids Constantine in finding his niece using her psychic abilities while she is also sought by two shadowy organizations. On the show she'll go "toe-to-toe" with Constantine and will be the co-lead in place of the Liv character.

Celaya is best known for her Spanish-language telenovela work with some stints in English on Burn Notice and Dallas. The Tucson native was chosen to bring some contrast to the snarky and cocky Constantine as well as some additional diversity to the show. Jennifer Salke, NBC Entertainment president, expressed the specific desire to cast an "authentic Latina actress" for the new lead role.

Constantine premieres October 24 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
