Donald Glover Gets Animated as Spider-Man for Disney

It may not be exactly what rapper and Community actor Donald Glover and his fans had in mind when the campaign to land the role in 2012's Amazing Spider-Man produced an infectious hashtag - #donald4spiderman - but he's still ecstatic to voice his favorite hero. He didn't get the live-action role but on Disney XD's animated series, Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, he'll finally get his chance as Miles Morales, the Spider-Man from a parallel universe.

That failed publicly-generated campaign did help ignite the imagination of writer, Brian Michael Bendis, in creating Morales, the half-Latino, half-black teenager, who takes the helm after the death of Peter Parker in the relaunched Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series. In the cartoon, Parker is traveling through different dimensions trying to stop the Green Goblin from gathering the DNA of all the Spider-Men and one of them is Morales. However, Parker is no longer alive in the dimension where Morales exists.

Glover is still hopeful to someday play a part in a live-action Spider-Man film but he's happy to be involved in some capacity with his favorite superhero of them all.
"I never liked Superman that much, because I was like, 'Yo, this dude can't die. It's too easy,' " Glover [told USA Today]. "Batman is pretty fly. He's a close second, just because he doesn't really have powers. He's just a justice-driven vigilante.
"Spider-Man is the best because you just don't know who he is, and he's funny and he's poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He's just trying to make it."
Had Sony chosen a new, fresh approach to the next Spider-Man movie franchise with Miles Morales instead of another Peter Parker reboot it might not be the derivative under-performing mish-mash it is today. Hindsight is easy and there's no telling how Glover would've fared in the role but his unabashed fandom adds to his performance in animated form.
