In a seemingly deliberate attempt to undermine all the good will Marvel has garnered for releasing an impressive list of female-led solo comic books (She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Elektra, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow) the solicitations for November revealed a stunner of a variant cover for the upcoming new Spider-Woman series by Dennis Hopeless and Greg Land.
It should not come as a surprise when an erotic illustrator delivers an erotic-looking comic book cover of Spider-Woman. Milo Manara was just being Milo Manara when he paid homage to one of his previous works in the design of the variant. The suggestive pose has not been received very well from female fans in particular, who have been fighting the over-sexualization of women in comics for years. Most surprising and maybe ironic is that the title was announced at the Women of Marvel panel at this year's SDCC.
This could certainly just be a well choreographed publicity stunt to drum up attention for the new series or just another example of tone deafness on the part of a comic book industry that notoriously treats female characters like sex objects.
