Warner Bros. announced they'd be moving the highly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice movie away from its head-to-head match-up with Captain America 3 on May 6 to March 25, 2016. Whether WB ever intended to keep to that date in the first place is debatable but it sure did spark a lot of controversy among fanboys. It never made sense because having two blockbuster comic book movies on the same weekend dilutes the box office for both features. The studio also released an entire slate of projected DC Comics films through 2020.
While the showdown of superhero movies was never a good idea to begin with the fact that WB had the good sense to move the date and announce more release dates could be a sign that the studio knows what it's doing and planning a major commitment for more DC Comics-based blockbusters. The smaller Marvel Studios only has one job - to crank out comic book movies - and they've been surprisingly successful with various heroes, known and unknown, here and internationally. Each film has done better than the last regardless of quality and have been more streamlined in jettisoning the next obscure hero(es) to film. The latest example is the juggernaut of Guardians of the Galaxy.
WB has relied on tentpole films based on Batman and Superman mainly over the last 35 years while mostly ignoring the vast catalog of material within their own DC Comics publishing arm. They still have to produce non-comic book films as movie studios are known to do but whether they admit it or not Marvel's success has made them look inept by comparison.
The list of release dates is more than was rumored and noted here but pretty close. The dates include DC and animated movies with "WB event" films which could mean another high profile property like J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequels.
Here are the proposed release dates:
Untitled DC Film - 08/05/16
Untitled DC Film - 06/23/17
Untitled DC Film - 11/17/17
Untitled DC Film - 03/23/18
Untitled Warner Animated Film - 05/25/18
Untitled DC Film - 07/27/18
Untitled WB Event Film - 11/16/18
Untitled DC Film - 04/05/19
Untitled Warner Animated Film - 05/24/19
Untitled DC Film - 06/14/19
Untitled DC Film - 04/03/20
Untitled DC Film - 06/19/20
Untitled WB Event Film - 11/20/20
Some of those dates should be filled by Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam, and Sandman. There better be a Wonder Woman film as well. A solo Superman sequel as well as a solo Batman film. If the previous rumor of a Green Lantern/Flash team-up comes true and maybe a Cyborg standalone or Justice League sequel could take up the nine spots.
We'll have to wait and see what WB has planned but at least they have a plan. That should appease some fans who criticize the studios' glacial pace of movie making. This blog is one of them.
