Jessica Chastain is Ready for a Superhero Movie

Nothing gets the internet going like a bonafide movie star saying she wants to be a kick-ass superhero and not just the female window dressing. If anyone can call her own shot it's Jessica Chastain. The highly sought-after Oscar-nominee has not let up since her break-out year in 2011 and has 3 films coming out this year alone. A chance at a comic book movie is almost certain. Who's going to stop her?

The star of The Help, Mama, and Zero Dark Thirty has already had opportunities to join a couple of comic book movies but as she tells The Guardian she's not settling for just any part.
“I would love to do a superhero movie!” she cries. “I would have loved to have played Black Widow.” Opportunity has presumably not been the issue; she dropped out of Iron Man 3, after all. “A couple of times I’ve gotten really close. The problem is, if I do a superhero movie, I don’t want to be the girlfriend. I don’t want to be the daughter. I want to wear a fucking cool costume with a scar on my face, with fight scenes. That’s what I’d love.”
The timing couldn't be better for Chastain with Marvel Studios and DC Comics/Warner Bros. slated to produce about 17 projects between them based on comic book properties, most of them superhero related, over the next 6-7 years. So she could take her pick of projects. Projects that could find her.

She worked with Guillermo Del Toro on Mama and earlier this year on Crimson Peak. He's been developing a Justice League Dark movie featuring the supernatural side of DC Comics for years. She could become Zantana but perhaps something grittier.

The red hair. The willowy build and pale skin. Chastain is tailor-made to fill the big red boots of Batwoman. The Gotham City vigilante inspired by Batman who battles crime in similar fashion would make for an interesting project for her Interstellar director Christopher Nolan if he chose to take another shot at a Bat-film. He's done pretty well in the Bat-verse.

There's the 300-pound gorilla out there named Marvel that's on an impressive roll with their franchise features dominating box offices the last few years that could easily draw Chastain's interest yet again. She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Woman are all theoretically possible.

Even independent properties like Painkiller Jane and Tomb Raider's Lara Croft could find Chastain destroying slimebags on a coast city somewhere or globe-trotting the world in search of high adventure. The possibilities are virtually endless.

The onus is going to be on the studios to come up with an exciting pitch with an incredible female hero squarely at its center. The sooner the better.
