With so many films slated to be released over the next few years, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are wasting no time in filling those spots. The latest news is that the studio is seeking to sign David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch, Fury)to direct the adaptation of DC Comics' Suicide Squad. It's not known if he's on board yet but there's a script by Justin Marks and Dan Lin (The LEGO Movie) is set to produce.
The squad is made up of supervillains, some might say second tier bad guys, who are imprisoned but get a chance to reduce their sentences if they operate as a black ops team under the direction of the federal government. These highly dangerous operations have been known to cost a villain his life but as long as they listen to their no-nonsense boss, agent Amanda Waller, then they'll have a chance to live out their sentence.
Fans of the CW's Arrow have been introduced to one iteration of the team featuring Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, and Shrapnel (<-- and="" didn="" follow="" he="" i="" kaboom="" orders="" t="" the="" went="">Squad
famously had a tremendous run in the comics under the writing of
John Ostrander during the '80s that featured among others Captain Boomerang (who by the way will appear on CW's
The Flash this season).

The newly revamped Suicide Squad in the New 52 universe of DC Comics features Deadshot once again, Black Manta, Deathstroke, Joker's Daughter (dont' ask), and Harley Quinn. Casting Quinn's role will be especially important as the character has become a fan favorite ever since debuting on Batman: The Animated Series. Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm in 1992, Quinn has often been portrayed as a sidekick and girlfriend to the Joker but has found her own following through the years in comics, video games and most recently headlining her own best selling comic book series. A character who has broken out in every other medium is likely to break out again in film.

It would be fitting to get Ayer as director, who also writes, to make a gritty and dark "villains united" movie because of his history of gritty and dark films. Perhaps his greatest skill is getting the best chemistry out of his actors. From Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in Training Day, to Jake Gyllenhaall and Michael Pena in End of Watch to even Keanu Reeves in Street Kings he writes and directs with an edgy realism that comes through as authentic on screen.
In this day of quippy heroics from costumed heroes it might be time to let some villains get in on the action and allow audiences to root for the bad guys. Even if Ayer passes it's a good sign that Warner Bros. sees the Suicide Squad as a valuable property enough so that Variety reveals, "characters will likely have an opportunity to cross over between other DC properties and vice versa for non-Suicide Squad members appearing in this film."
