Marvel set the internet on fire yesterday with a special event that introduced the slate of films for Phase 3 that unsurprisingly include sequels to some of their biggest hits but also confirmed suspicions of a Black Panther and Captain Marvel movie. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, took to the stage of the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood to an adoring crowd of fans and press alike and laid out the movies and dates for the next five years.
Besides the already announced Doctor Strange movie (Benedict Cumberbatch has not officially signed on yet) there will be sequels to Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Captain America, and the third Avengers film will be broken up into two parts. There will also be an Inhumans movie as well. Along with the recent slate of DC Comics movies announced there’ll be at least 30 comic book movies coming over the next six years.
Here's a quick look at Marvel's Phase 3:
Captain America: Civil War — May 6, 2016
Doctor Strange — Nov. 4, 2016
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 — May 5, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok — July 28, 2017
Black Panther — Nov. 3, 2017
The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 — May 4, 2018
Captain Marvel – July 6, 2018
Inhumans — Nov. 2, 2018
The Avengers: Infinity War Part II — May 3, 2019
Who needs Comic-Con when you have a venue all to yourself with a captive audience because the energy was reminiscent of Halll H as Feige announced that Captain America 3 would indeed be subtitled after the comic book storyline, Civil War, though it won’t follow it exactly. Robert Downey, Jr., and Chris Evans were on hand and joined Feige on stage. Civil War pits Captain America and Iron Man on opposite sides of the Super-Human Registration Act. The law mandates that super-powered individuals must register with the government as a safety measure for the public. Cap’s opposition to the Act conflicts with Iron Man’s attempts to enforce it.
In news that fans were longing to hear for years, Marvel finally confirmed that not only Black Panther is coming to the big screen but so is Captain Marvel. This will be Marvel’s first superhero movies that feature an African-American and a woman as the leads of their own features. Marvel’s lack of diversity has been criticized heavily (including on this blog) but Feige said both had been in development for years but couldn’t announce until things were finalized. Whatever the reason it’s a major development that has been long overdue. They’ll join Warner Bros.’ DC Comics counterparts in solo films Wonder Woman and Cyborg that also feature a non-white male lead.
Feige surprised fans with the introduction of Chadwick Boseman who'll play Black Panther, T'Challa. He joined Downey and Evans on stage. T’Challa is the king of the
fictional African Nation of Wakanda and takes up the mantle of the Panther God
after his father is murdered by Ulysses Klaw over the rare metal vibranium. It’s
the same material that Captain America’s shield is made from. He has superhuman strength, speed, and stamina. There have been
various Black Panthers since his debut in 1966.
The
advanced alien race of the Kree will be important to Captain Marvel and The
Inhumans. In Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers is an Air Force pilot who gains
superpowers after her genes are fused with that of the Kree. And The Inhumans
are an ancient population of humans who acquired their powers from the Kree. A
whole new cast of characters will be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic
Universe clearing the way for another potential franchise blockbuster.
Thor: Ragnorak will be the third installment of the franchise and Feige says it will be a vital story going forward after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The Avengers third film,Infinity War, will take place over two parts, one in 2018 and the other in 2019. They'll finally battle Thanos who's made cameos in other Marvel movies so far.
Fans were rightfully excited in the theater and online as well. Some of their favorite characters and stories are on their way to the big screen fulfilling some long standing dreams. However, some fans make this A competition versus Warner Bros. DC Comics movies. If you're a fan of comics and their movies you should be rooting for all of them to succeed. That's if you want to ensure that they keeping making them.
Some press media was just as guilty. Some reiterated their dissatisfaction with the way WB announced their slate of films via press release and showing preferrence to Marvel's official event in Hollywood. The bottom line is movie making is a business. As entertainment news sites you're going to report it regardless how it's disseminated. Pitting one studio over the other because you were invited to a nice venue with actors and producers to mingle with in one and not the other is unprofessional.
Anyway, Marvel is doing what Marvel does best - planning. Their slate of films should add more billions in ticket sales for years to come. They've set a bar that is the envy of all studios. A track record that is mind-boggling and so far there's nothing to deter them from continuing to make blockbusters.
This helps the genre to survive for all studios and fans. Let us rejoice!

"In the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the supernatural, that involves everything from quantum mechanics to string theory. The idea of this film is to open up a whole new corner of the cinematic universe. We want to enter, through Strange, the world of parallel dimensions."
