The craziest Spider-Man movie rumor yet involves Peter Parker's Aunt May as a young spy in a period piece similar to Marvel's Agent Carter television series. This is not a drill people! Sony is actually considering this. At least that's the word from Latino Review whose editorial staff greenlit the story. Would you see an Aunt May movie without Spider-Man in it?
Sony is hoping you will. The studio that holds the movie rights to the web crawler is desperate to keep them and looking to find an angle, any angle, to make sure they keep making them. The Amazing Spider-Man franchise has under-performed by blockbuster tentpole films standards and mysteriously a simple third installment is not what Sony has in mind.
Rumors have run the gamut from a villain team-up film, Sinister Six, a solo villain movie, Venom, to an all-female Spider-verse hero team feature. Now for some unknown reason they're moving their focus to Aunt May but it's not the first time her backstory was tinkered with.
In 1984, issue #137 of 'Marvel Team-Up' she got cosmic powers in Aunt May and Franklin Richards vs Galactus. In 2003, Mark Millar wrote a teen romance mini-series, Trouble, where May was impregnated by Richard Parker with baby Peter. So stranger things have happened to Aunt May.
This is all rumored so let's hope for Sony's sake it's all a red herring and they just strut out Andrew Garfield in Spidey's tights one last time. Or as some fans have wanted, give the rights back to Marvel. That seems highly unlikely.
