Could it be that Suicide Squad casting is finally starting to close some deals? According to Collider Margot Robbie will indeed star in the movie in the role of fan favorite and Joker accomplice, Harley Quinn. Could the signings of Will Smith and Tom Hardy be far behind?
Only a few days ago Jared Leto was rumored to be considered for the role of the Joker and a week before that a different rumor had Cara Delevingne up for Quinn. With Harley Quinn currently appearing in the Suicide Squad comic book series it's no surprise she'd be in the film adaptation and now we know that it'll be Robbie.
The Australian actress's breakout role came in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and has been a hot property ever since. She has three films coming up, Focus (also starring Smith), Z for Zachariah, and Tarzan before Suicide Squad. It's not known which version of Quinn she'll have to play.
Will she be the high-pitched voiced accomplice of the Joker with the gag weapons and jester's hood from the animated series where she originated from? Or the red-and-blue haired roller derby skating anti-hero of her best-selling comic book series? Either way the connection with the Joker is a dark one.
The once Dr. Harleen Quinzel was a psychiatrist who treated the Joker at Arkham Asylum until he psychologically manipulated her, she fell for him, and became his side-kick and girlfriend. It led to a long mentally abusive relationship where the Joker used her affections to do his bidding. It will be the first live-action appearance for the character.
This is hoping it's just the beginning of more casting confirmations. Suicide Squad is due out in 2016.
