Variety posted some interesting scoops about DC Comics movies yesterday, first Michelle MacLaren being approached to direct the Wonder Woman solo movie then later with the story of Jai Courtney being sought for the Suicide Squad movie as Deadshot. Lost within the same post was the speculation that Will Smith was being cast to play Captain Boomerang. So the Australian actor isn't going to play the Australian character but Smith is? Curious indeed.
Anyway, Courtney has become a hot property in Hollywood. Already part of the Divergent franchise after appearing in the gazillion entry of the Die Hard series as John McClane's son. He's also playing Kyle Reese in the latest Terminator installment, Terminator: Genisys out next year with Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. He could be joining another franchise if Suicide Squad proves to be a hit. Warner Bros is trying their hardest to enlist A-list talent to ensure that possibility.
The David Ayers-directed comic book adaptation features a team of supervillains enlisted by the government to take on dangerous secret missions in exchange for lighter sentences if they survive. Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie are all in different stages of negotiations with the studio according to reports and there's still the possibility of Jesse Eisenberg reprising his Batman V Superman role of Lex Luthor as well.
I'm hoping Variety has it backwards and Courtney is eyed for Captain Boomerang. I'm sure Smith's Aussie accent is great but why makes things more difficult than they have to be?
Also, in the scoop was Hardy playing the part of Rick Flagg. A character that goes back to 1959 as the leader of the original Suicide Squad during World War II and later as Task Force X after the war. It's an interesting homage to the history of the comic book.
Suicide Squad is expected to be released in 2016 and produced by Charles Roven.
