Hollywood's worst kept secret has finally been made official. Casting for David Ayer's DC Comic's adaptation, Suicide Squad, has been rumored to include some of the industry's hottest A-listers and up and coming stars. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. announced that the long in negotiations casting had snagged Will Smith as Deathshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Cara Delevigne as the Enchantress.
Deals for the all-star cast were finalized after weeks of negotiations and shooting will begin in Toronto next April. Most impressive for WB was that the high profile actors they targeted were all signed. Names emerged a while ago as a wish list and the usual reports of actors being "in talks" or being "looked at" but the once ancillary film featuring DC's government-controlled black ops team of supervillains has morphed into a potential blockbuster tentpole film. And the studio isn't done casting yet.
Jesse Eisenberg is reportedly still in talks to reprise his Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice role of Lex Luthor in the movie. Squad could be featuring not only Batman's arch enemy but also Superman's. It already features a bonafide movie star in Smith, an Oscar-winner in Leto, critically acclaimed and former Batman baddie Bane in Hardy and rising stars in Robbie, Courtney and Delevigne. Adding the Oscar-nominated Eisenberg would certainly make this the "Ocean's Eleven" of comic book films.
But wait there's more!
Variety reported there was one vital role still unfilled but WB was looking at a trio of talented powerhouse actresses. Amanda Waller is the tough no-nonsense director of the squad officially known as Task Force X that makes the supervillains deals they can't refuse. It takes a woman with presence and stature capable of standing up to the deadliest criminals in the world. Who better in that role potentially than Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer or Oprah Winfrey. Oprah is the leading candidate according to the industry trade.
Suicide Squad is slated for release on August 5, 2016.
