'Batman Unlimited', 'DC Super Friends' Toy Lines and Cartoons in the Works at DC Entertainment
Unlike their live-action counterparts, Arrow and The Flash, the animated characters will also be accompanied by their respective toy lines. If you wanted to go down to your local Toys R Us and pick yourself up a Green Arrow action figure based on Stephen Amell or a Flash figure based on Grant Gustin you'd be out of luck. Fortunately, the animated side of Warner Bros. is getting a synergistic boost of cartoons and toys.
Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts features Batman, Nightwing, Green Arrow, The Flash and Red Robin against the Penguin and new evil cyber animals. The straight-to-video animated movie will be released on May 12 and a sequel will drop in the Fall. There will also be 22 two-minute shorts and an app in addition to the movie.
The action figures from Mattel are available now.
DC Super Friends is the toy line geared toward younger children produced within the Fisher-Price Imaginext line and will have 15 three-minute shorts and an app itself in the Spring. It's based on DC Comics Justice League with a familiar name of the classic Super Friends cartoon of the early 80's.
Friends toys have been available for some time since DC's heroes have been well established for decades. Now there'll be animated shorts based on them. Usually, a toy line is created to support an existing property like a cartoon, TV show, or movie. This time around the toymakers and Warner Bros. decided to let demand grow organically.
The timing couldn't be better as Warner Bros. and DC Comics have not only existing projects on TV, they have more in the works as well as a major slate of superhero films the next five years. Having toys and cartoons geared toward kids helps establish a growing fan base that will hopefully lead to new TV and movie viewers down the line.
Now if only they could integrate the comic books from where they were born to help create new readers. That would be true synergy.
