The search for Supergirl is over. CBS and Warner Bro.s Televison have found their 'girl in Glee alum and Whiplash standout Melissa Benoist. In a casting search that included testing for actresses Claire Holt and Gemma Atkinson, Benoist has won out and will play Kara Zor-El (Superman's cousin) who landed on earth, fostered by the Danvers and discouraged to use her powers until a terrible event forces her into action ignited her passion for helping people.
Benoist joined Glee in season four, two seasons after I stopped watching, but you can get a look at her in action in superhero attire during a performance on the show. For the episode called 'Dynamic Duets' she sings Bonnie Tyler's 1986 classic 'Holding Out for a Hero' while donning an outfit as 'Woman Fierce.' She'll join another Glee alum, Grant Gustin (The Flash), to take on a DC Comics character on prime time.
Produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family), Supergirl, will mark CBS’s first comic book adaptation since 1990’s The Flash with John Wesley Shipp who now plays the wrongly convicted father of The CW’s Flash.
It will also be the last broadcast network to jump aboard the comic book show bandwagon. The CW (Arrow,
The Flash), NBC (Constantine),
ABC (Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter),
Fox (Gotham) have been mostly successful
with more shows on their way. Netflix (Marvel’s
Daredevil) TNT (Teen Titans drama), PlayStation Network (Powers) are in the works now with the CW considering
adding another DC Comics character spin-off. The TV landscape is getting a
little crowded but with Berlanti’s winning streak, Supergirl should be a good bet to succeed with the first female
superhero solo series on network television.
