One of the great things about this renaissance of superhero television is the long memory of showrunners who bring back actors who made their mark in tights. Helen Slater played Supergirl in the 1984 theatrical release and Dean Cain famously donned the cape as Superman/Clark Kent on ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in the '90s. They will have guest starring roles in CBS's upcoming Supergirl series.
No word yet as to what characters they'll play but this is just the latest casting news in a recent surge of new additions.
Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) recently was cast as boss Cat Grant to Supergirl/Kara Zor-El's Melissa Benoist (Glee). Laura Benanti (Nashville) will play Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El, who continues to advise her from beyond.
The cast also includes Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy) as Kara’s foster sister Alex, David Harewood (Homeland) as Department of Extra-Normal Operations chief Hank Henshaw, and Mehcad Brooks ( Desperate Housewives) as Jimmy Olsen and potential love interest.
Based on the characters from DC Comics, Supergirl will follow Kara Zor-El. Born on the planet Krypton, Kara escaped amid its destruction years ago. And since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
Executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Sarah Schechter (The Flash) have just added Andrew Kreisberg (Arrow, The Flash) as a writer and executive producer.
