REVIEW: 'King: Jungle Jim' #1 by Paul Tobin and Sandy Jarrell

In a world under the tyrannical power of the merciless Ming, this newest King Features Syndicate homage, Jungle Jim, is another refreshingly entertaining adventure with surprisingly very little Jungle Jim in it.

Dynamite Entertainment has taken these classic heroes from the early 1930's and made them contemporary and accessible in ways that shame the Big Two's huge convoluted crossover "events" with interesting characters both big and small.

Jungle Jim in particular, doesn't appear much in the first issue, but rather his legend looms large and drives the narrative. That's the amazing thing about Paul Tobin's script. The supporting characters have their own personalities and are at once compelling on their own.

Lillie is in search of the legendary Jim in hopes to help her save her brother from the evil Ming. She enlists the help of Thun and Kugor to navigate the vast jungle. Each has an engaging story to tell and so much is revealed in so little time that we not only get to know these characters we actually like them.

Sandy Jarrell does a wonderful job of providing so much detail in such a difficult and immersive world such as a jungle with so many trees, leaves, vines and brush that it comes to life and off the page. The story is laid out beautifully and the scenes are well staged and shot.

Jungle Jim is a worthy addition to the King line. It's fun, well-written, rendered beautifully and 100% entertaining. Take the adventure with Lillie and Jungle Jim and find out how they can defeat the evil Ming.
