Watch This Ultra-Violent 'Power Rangers' Fan Film While You Can
James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff Star in this Dark Futuristic Take on the Children's Adventure Series
Lionsgate may be making a film adaptation that's more in-line with the classic Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, full of bright costumes and enthusiastic teenagers. Well, for director Joseph Khan and producer Adi Shankar they chose to make a short film that's more Tarantino and Terminator.
As part of Shankar's 'Bootleg Universe' series of shorts like those involving Judge Dredd, Venom, and the Punisher, this one-shot is also high-quality fan filmmaking. The graphics, stunts, and visual effects are top notch. Watching a grizzled, hardened Rocky (Van Der Beek) interrogate a bound and defiant Kimberly (Sackhoff) about the other Rangers is an intense and bloody ride.
Saban Brands, who owns the rights to the franchise, already has put in a complaint and had the Vimeo video removed. So watch it while you can on YouTube.
If you're wondering why anyone would turn a goofy, fun kid's show into a ferociously violent and profane short film watch an interview with the producer Adi Shankar below:
When I was a child I had two favorite TV shows the X-Men animated series and Power Rangers. I eventually came to the realization that high school kids weaponized to fight an intergalactic threat would turn those kids into some seriously disturbed adults.
