Phil Lord Talks 'The Flash' As A Stand-Alone Film Featuring Barry Allen

When you're as successful and in-demand as Phil Lord and Chris Miller, you'd expect the dynamic duo to be juggling numerous projects and responsibilities. The guys behind The Lego Movie and the surprise hit franchise of 21 Jump Street are indeed busy with their hands in television, live-action films and of course animation. However, one topic of interest, The Flash feature film starring Ezra Miller, has just gotten an update from Lord himself.

During an interview with Florida's Hippojuice, Lord addresses the elephant in the room - how will the movie differ from the hit TV show on the CW, The Flash, already featuring Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) as the Scarlet Speedster?
We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. … It’s going to be it’s own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.
Interesting to note that this confirms many things: Lord and Miller's involvement in the production, the casting of Ezra Miller and that they'll be bringing Barry Allen, not Wally West, to the big screen. Also, it's a stand-alone film which is surprising considering the number DC Comics movies slated to be released that this one wouldn't be tied to those. He'll also be seen in Justice League and rumored to make a cameo in Batman V Superman

With Lord and Miller writing the script (and possibly directing), we fully expect a lighter, more fun approach to their corner of the DC Universe. That approach has worked very well for the television counterpart and is more in keeping with the comic book version of Flash.

Check out the podcast below as Lord also talks about the animated Spider-Man feature he and Miller are developing for Sony as well as comments about how The Lego Movie came together.
