MATURE READERS ONLY |
★★★★☆ (4/5)
Needless to say, 'Holy F*cked' #1 by Nick Marino and Daniel Arruda Massa is not for the easily offended. It's an outrageous religious parody that could upset some of the faithful. For everyone else, the book is a funny and wild reimagining of biblical and mythological proportions.
The premise is fairly simple. A buffed out skater dude, Jesus, is in domestic bliss with househusband Satan and are about to welcome a baby. Meanwhile, a vengeful Hercules swears to destroy Jesus for killing Zeus and ruining Mount Olympus.
It's a fast-paced and funny adventure that sees a well-hung thrasher share the good news with Maria at the local soup kitchen. The humor is adult and occasionally raunchy, but never mean spirited. There's some nudity, but this is a mature read after all. For all the twisted religious dogma, 'Holy F*cked' is more endearing and entertaining than just simplistic blasphemy. It's a wild cartoonish story for grown-ups.
Arruda Massa's art is fun and cartoony but with bonafide technical skill in laying out a well-paced story. Sure, it's ridiculously amusing and light but Arruda Massa creates great character designs and action with clever perspectives.
For most people, 'Holy F*cked' is more likely to put a smile on your face than a scowl. It's an outrageous romp through reimagined mythology set in Los Angeles of all places that'll make you snort with laughter.
