REVIEW: 'The Doorman' #1 by Eliot Rahal, Daniel Kibblesmith, and Kendall Goode

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Heavy Metal has another fun and unique sci-fi comic in 'The Doorman' #1 by Eliot Rahal, Daniel Kibblesmith, and Kendall Goode. Henry Clay Waters is the titular doorman who's been manning the interstellar portal that connects earth to other inhabited planets. It just so happens that on his last day on the job he's attacked by an assassin and saved by an alien cop. Instead of retiring, Waters is thrown into the most exciting and dangerous adventure of his life.

Just as Waters is whisked away by Detective Flower back through the door, so is the reader and it doesn't let up from there. We get to meet the main villain and his dastardly plan. Rahal and Kibblesmith waste no time letting us get to the know the main characters and what is at stake. The fast pace and easily hateable billionaire Carlisle Moongale will have you rooting for Waters and Flower right off the bat.

It all leads to an explosive third act with a shocking cliffhanger. What more can you ask of a premiere issue? Goode's fantastic art gives the story vibrancy and energy through great character designs and bright bold colors. Michael Allred will come to mind as you watch the denizens of the alien planet Synergos mill around in their version of Times Square. The world building is instant and inviting with tons of a little details in the background to explore.

'The Doorman' has a lot going for it. It's a refreshing enjoyable and entertaining interstellar adventure laced with danger, conspiracies, and mystery. It's something you can dive into right away and keep wanting more. The diverse leads are also a welcomed change but most of all 'The Doorman' is a blast.
