Wan Responds and Just How Many Villains Are In Ben Affleck's Batman Film?

The DCEU rumor train keeps chugging along and your conductor is Devin Faraci. He's back with another rumor from unnamed sources regarding the solo 'Batman' film that Ben Affleck will star and direct. 

After the Hollywood trades disclosed the departure of first-time feature film director Seth Grahame-Smith from 'The Flash' film over "creative differences," Faraci on his Birth.Movies.Death blog coincidentally offered up a vague rumor about 'Aquaman' director James Wan feeling "trepidation" about going forward. 

Wan hasn't commented directly but the busy director/producer of 'The Conjuring 2' (out June 10), only posted this photo on Twitter on Sunday evening many think, debunks the notion of him walking away from the project.

With that rumor still floating on the net, Faraci posted another story revealing that the solo film Ben Affleck has been working on with Geoff Johns will feature a who's who of Bat-villains. Amid speculation and guesses in the piece this is what his source had to say:

Many, if not most, members of Batman's rogue's gallery will be making appearances in the film. It's going to be crammed with Bat villains, which means that just about every major bad guy you've ever wanted to see in a movie will be in this movie. According to my sources Affleck and Geoff Johns, who has been working with him on the film, want to make the definitive Batman film. They want to tell the ultimate Batman story, and to do so they're going to bring in all the big guns. They're going to have a big, sprawling Bat universe already in place.

It's not clear how they're going to incorporate so many villains in one movie but the obvious setting would be at Arkham Asylum. There was also some speculation about using some of the 'Under the Red Hood' storyline bringing Jason Todd back from the dead as the vicious hooded vigilante. That seems unlikely but it's fun imagining the Riddler, Penguin, Clayface, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and others all in the same movie. 

What's not fun is imagining the same film and remembering what Joel Schumacher did with 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman & Robin.' Both films featured multiple villains and were more an ode to the campy 60's television series than the comic books. 

Still, I trust that the talented Oscar-winning screenwriter and lauded director, Affleck will find a generous balance of villains, big and small, to populate his film if the rumor holds true. If he can pull this off he'll be in rarified air reserved for Chris Nolan. 

Now we can write all those fan casting pieces about which actor/actress should play which villain. Mine begins with Eva Green as Dr. Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy. What's yours?
