REVIEW: 'The Hunt' #5 by Colin Lorimer and Joana Lafuente

In this miniseries finale, 'The Hunt' #5 provides plenty of thrills and chills ending in shocking fashion. Which is why I'm forced to hold back on details so not to spoil them for anyone. It's just not fair. What is fair is the incredible skill and scope of creator Colin Lorimer has poured into this mythological suspense story. It's one of the most visually stunning comics out there.  

Joana Lafuente's colors have enlivened the series with brilliant electric hues that bring the supernatural elements to the forefront. Her consistent work continues in the finale. It's just the work of Lorimer and Lafuente telling the story sans dialogue or captions for a stretch in the issue and remains every bit as compelling. As an artist, Lorimer is a rising star following the path Michael Gaydos, Michael Lark, and Sean Phillips has laid before him. 

As a writer, Lorimer only falters slightly but keeps the drama ratcheted up as revelations are exposed near the end. The conflict of the otherworldly groups comes to a head in an unpredictable fashion. Orla steps up in a big way, proving her mettle and basically kicking ass. I walked away wanting to follow Orla's next adventure as soon as I finished the story. Lorimer has found a great protagonist in Orla.

'The Hunt' has opened a new realm of magic and mythology based on Irish lore and Lorimer has barely scratched the surface of what's possible. This is a great introduction to a supernatural world that is distinct and suspenseful. Whatever shortcomings in this mini are saved by the brilliant art and composition. I highly recommend it and worth every penny to pick up the trade when it arrives.
