REVIEW: 'Morgan's Organs' #1 by Daniel Brodie and Robert Jennex

★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Marketed as Pixar's Inside Out for adults, 'Morgan's Organs' is just that, a coming-of-age sex comedy as witnessed through the inner workings of the titular character's body. There's a civil war brewing between Morgan's brain and his nether regions as the sexually frustrated college student tries to overcome a very long dry spell.

'Morgan's Organ's' represents the very essence of independent comics. This "Book 1" is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign for creators Daniel Brodie and Robert Jennex. ("Book 2is currently live and open for pledges.) They've taken comic book publishing into their own hands and created a funny bawdy comic.

Bran (the brain) is micro-managing Morgan's life in order to keep him focused on the important stuff in his life. Meanwhile, Pepe (the penis) is anxious to get back in the game and jumpstart his sex drive and sex life. The two are at odds throughout along with a cast of characters (organs) with their own responsibilities and personalities.

The story is also told from Morgan's perspective, following his everyday life full of sex dreams, college classes, and being one of the bros. Although, through Bran's programming, Morgan is unable to close the deal with any prospective females. This frustrates Pepe of course and practically causes a coup within the hierarchy of Morgan's body. For all its bawdy talk and sexual frustrations, the story really revolves around letting go, not being so uptight, and discovering one's confidence.

Jennex's cartoonish character designs bring a playful and wacky look to all the absurd fun going on in Morgan's body. Even Angus the anus is adorable. It's a twisted take on the emotional avatars of Inside Out, opting for the more instinctual and mechanical inner workings of the male id, basically farts and lust bound by fear. Jennex captures it all with brilliant colors and plenty of whimsical creativity.

Morgan's Organs is a great example of independent creators making it happen. Brodie and Jennex produced a fun tale that comes full circle opening the door for another chapter. It's just the type of project that deserves your support.
