Netflix has wasted no time in bearing fruit from their acquisition of Mark Millar's Millarworld comic label.
The Magic Order will be the first comic, in print and digital, created under the new collaboration written by Millar with art by Olivier Coipel (
Thor, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man).
This series will be six issues long and the first will be released in Spring 2018. The Magic Order will be available for sale in print format through comic stores and other retail outlets and will also be available for digital purchase.
"Magic meets the mob," is how the comic is described in a press release. The people keeping monsters at bay are part of five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations. A deadly threat begins to eliminate them one-by-one and these sorcerers, magicians, and wizards who secretly reside among us must face this dark force before it's too late.
“We wanted to make a splash with our first book for Netflix and this is it. I love dark fantasy and there’s an enormous gap in the market for something like this. Netflix hiring Olivier has also made me the happiest guy alive. I’ve been after him for almost ten years so to finally have our names in the same book is an absolute honour” said Millar, President and Chief Creative Officer, Millarworld, a subsidiary of Netflix.
This first release is quite the salvo for Netflix's foray into comics, a strategic acquisition that bolsters the streaming giant's offerings with an in-house content provider without the wranglings of licensing with other comic publishers. Pairing Millar with Coipel is a superstar line-up that is sure to make 'The Magic Order' the latest hit (and probable adaptation) for Millarworld after the success of titles like Wanted, Kingsman, and Kick-Ass.
