If you love classic Red Sonja stories then issue twelve is right up your alley. After spending time in our world, Chu sends Sonja along with Wallace to another dimension through one of his portals and things get off to a rough start.
Landing in a desert, Sonja and Wallace come across a tavern after traveling on foot for miles. It wouldn't be a Red Sonja story without chugging some beer and throwing some fists. A priest arrives looking for safe passage across the desert and is willing to pay willing warriors to protect him. Sonja is more than willing to prove her mettle and of course, sets off leading the pack.
I'll be honest, this is a straight-forward adventure story, one we've seen before but it's no less entertaining. Who doesn't like seeing Sonja kicking ass and saving the day? But it's more than that when the cool twist at the end ups the ante on this chapter.
Carlos Gomez's art really takes off during the fight scenes. It's a fast-paced issue overall and Gomez's line work is solid but the chaotic battle is a blast. Mohan comes through with some subtle but effective colors that place the emphasis squarely on Sonja herself.
If traditional Red Sonja stories are what you're looking for this one fits the bill. Chu understands what makes an exciting adventure and she hits all the beats regardless of how familiar they may be. Gomez brings the battle to glorious life. Look, you can't go wrong with this series.
