In Wonder Woman #78, we saw Barbara Ann Minerva easily best Diana in battle, destroying both her Lasso of Truth and her iconic bracers with a slice of her seemingly undefeatable sword. She made it look simple, and since her defeat, Diana just hasn’t seemed the same. She looks beaten, worn down, older… It’s as if the spirit that has driven her since she first set foot in man’s world has gone out, and it’s unnerving to witness.

Ever since the Cheetah murdered Aphrodite at the end of Wonder Woman #76, the horrors of a world without love have become gradually apparent. With no care, selflessness or empathy, human society seems to be slowly unraveling. Even worse, it doesn’t look like there’s a way to stop it. Aphrodite is dead. There’s no bringing her back. And you can’t fight the sudden disappearance of something that once was, especially when it’s as intangible as it is important.
