'The Plot' continues to thicken (sorry) as we get more background on the characters and that goddamn bog is ever-present. In chapter four, the narrative builds upon itself with great transitions from Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel. The scenes are tied together with interactions that add depth and story development. A sense of tension and dread hangs on every page and that is what has made this series a must-read. It's an unrelenting gothic family drama that hinges on sins of the past and its consequences.
As great a horror comic 'The Plot' is, it does an even better job at fleshing out these characters and making us care for their predicament. Chase especially turns out as a more empathetic character and the Sheriff's dickish behavior reveals another layer of resentment for the Blaine family. All the while people keep getting pulled into the damn water. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would stay there with all the eerie dangerous shenanigans going on but at least Josh Hixson and Jordan Boyd make it look appropriately frightening and claustrophobic.
It's some of the finest atmospheric art you'll see in comics. Sure, writers and artists work hand-in-hand but when it comes to creating a tone, an atmosphere, a sense of suspense essential in horror, it doesn't get any better or more effective than Hixson and Boyd.
'The Plot' is one of the best comics on the market. It mixes gothic horror with familiar drama that continues to draw readers in and rewarding them with new revelations. At the heart of the story is a family trying to cope with loss and grief amid a secret past that refuses to stay secret. There's a reason 'The Plot' continues to sell like mad, it's worth every penny.
