QUICK REVIEW: With such a creative and expansive premise, 'Undiscovered Country' could be unwieldy given the number of characters involved. A selective group of scientists and experts enter the USA after it shuttered itself from the world for over thirty years. Now, with the group on the inside, it's a race against time to find a cure for a worldwide pandemic if they can survive. Each member has their own backstory and voice that needs to be presented. It was one of the things I pointed out last month that perhaps while it was necessary to depict these dialogue-heavy conversations it may bog down the overall storytelling.
In this issue, Charles Soule and Scott Snyder smartly focus on one of the characters, Ace Kenyatta, to flesh out his place on this team. It's the perfect antidote to trying to do much to give balance to the group dynamics. There are much-needed flashbacks that illustrate his expertise and just how he got invited. All the while, the story switches back to the present day and the mission at hand. The writers find a nice groove in pacing and letting Ace show his competence.
The art team of Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, and Matt Wilson continue to do extraordinary work. The pacing, the detail, the overall command of tone and design is some of the best you'll ever see in comics. It's frankly amazing how the panels are spaced to accommodate the sometimes plentiful word balloons that Crank! cranks out.
This is easily the best issue so far in the series because it handles so many things so well while advancing the story and building on the characters. Combined with exceptional art, 'Undiscovered Country' is finding its groove in telling one epic story.
