The comic book universe of 'Kick-Ass' is an interesting niche all its own. Since its inception by legendary creators Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr., 'Kick-Ass' comics were a subversive piece of exploitative superhero satire that coupled its gory with violence with humor. The exploits of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl were light on nuance and heavy on blood and guts. Since the original Kick-Ass, Dave Lizewski, retired, Mindy aka Hit-Girl has traveled the world, and military vet Patience Lee has taken up the mantle for Dave.
The new Kick-Ass series has all the violence without the humor taking a more serious straight-forward approach to the vigilante saga. Patience is tough, resilient, and smart. She takes on the role as a form of survival and a way to bring justice to her town. She encounters drug cartels and the body count is too high to count. This is what you'd expect from a 'Kick-Ass' series. Hit-Girl is as crazy and as psychotic as ever, slicing and dicing the bad guys with reckless abandon. After visiting exotic locales all over the world in a mini-series featuring different creative teams, she's hot on the trail of the Kick-Ass pretender.
The world of 'Kick-Ass' doesn't ask much of the reader. There are some instances of character development and self-reflection depending on the creative team but for the most part, the comic is one giant Rated R action movie with violence that will make you wince in disgust. So, a series like this is polarizing, you'll either love it or hate it. I love it for what it is. An unapologetic gore-fest dressed up as a vigilante anti-hero comic. I applaud Millar for choosing a black woman to take the reins of Kick-Ass and give her mission some weight and dignity that the original didn't have simply because it was for laughs. I do wish the creative teams behind the comics were more diverse as well.
Steve Niles finally pits Kick-Ass against Hit-Girl in the showdown we've all been waiting for. It couldn't happen at a worse time as Patience's crew has revolted against her. Marcelo Frusin and Sunny Gho take on the bulk of the story with dynamic action sequences in bold colors. 'Kick-Ass vs Hit-Girl' is more of what you expect from this series as Mindy adds to the death count. It's a bloody mess and for fans of the series, they wouldn't want it any other way.
